Keeping Macs Awake

Amphetamine is a free utilities and tools software developed by William Gustafson. The software keeps Mac computers turned on through user-specified triggers.

Turning On Computers With Triggers

Amphetamine is created for users who want to keep their computers awake and open at all times through specified input methods. There are some users who don’t want their computers to sleep, dim or automatically open the screensaver when left in idle. Before installing the software, user must first have a macOS 10.10 Yosemite or a higher version. It keeps both the computer and display awake in two ways: either using the software’s on/off switch or customizable Triggers. The software balances powerful functionalities with intuitive and simple features. The first on/off option allows starting of a keep-awake session on the software’s menu. Users can keep their computer awake indefinitely, awake for an amount of time, or awake only a specific time of the day. Having a computer awake is helpful whenever users have to download a large file or keeping an application running. The second option is an advance waking automation through a Trigger. There are several trigger options that users can choose. The trigger activates by connecting an external display, USB, Bluetooth device or AC power is connected, running a frontmost application, charging the Mac’s battery, at the same time the battery reaches above a power threshold, accessing a specific IP address or WiFi network, utilizing headphones or an audio output and mounting a drive or volume.

Additional Wakeup Functions

The software comes with additional features other than awake mode. It has a Drive Alive mode to keep the computer’s drive constantly running. It allows integration with AppleScript. It also works with Mac-exclusive features like macOS dark mode, as well as Retina displays. Users can have their menu bar icon running in the software. They can maintain their Mac open while the display is in sleep mode. They can allow their computer’s screensaver to run once the time period of inactivity is done. There is an optional display for session time remaining in 12 or 24 hour format. The software can automatically terminate its awake session once the battery runs low. They can assign hot keys for a simpler starting/ending of sessions.
